Microbial Bio-therapeutics

DESCRIPTION Probiotics have been defined as non‐pathogenic micro‐ organisms
(principally Lactic Acid bacteria) that, when ingested, exert a positive
influence on host health or physiology. Although probiotics have been
important components of the human diet for millennia (in fermented
milks and cheese), there is still no clear understanding of the
mechanism(s) by which they promote health. Recent trials examining the
ability of probiotics to treat specific clinical conditions have produced
intriguing results: decreased duration of diarrhoea, reduction in blood
pressure, reduction in serum cholesterol, regression of colon tumours,
and even cure depression, prompting medical professionals to wonder if
probiotics could be used as a direct therapeutic agent. This project will
investigate the possible mechanisms by which probiotics induce such
health‐ promoting effects, and will consider if there is a role for probiotic
bacteria in modern medical practice.
